This past summer, (my daughter) begged me to do a camp with you all, but I hit one of those times as a single parent where many surprise expenses happened all at once. I was a little embarrassed and apprehensive about filling out the scholarship form, but Kelly was so kind and encouraged me to do so. I was able get some help which enabled me to sign her up, and she was elated. We didn’t know what to expect, but having done shows with other companies, (my daughter) was ready to jump in and try. What I have witnessed since her short time at HITS last summer is a change of character and confidence. Santry expected the best from each student. (My daughter) said he knew when she could do more, and he insisted and pulled it out of her. She had a lead role, but said the feeling in the room was teamwork and everyone was important whether you were a lead or a supporting character with one line. She came home each night so excited to go right back the next day. After the production ended, she said it felt like a little family separating. It’s not just the artistic staff, everyone we encountered was helpful, encouraging, and kind. This is the culture which I have seen at HITS time and again with other kids we’ve known to be there. (My daughter) went on with a new confidence to do roles with other companies this fall, but continues to ask when she can go back to HITS. What has stayed with me most as a mother is that (my daughter) went into the camp with some confidence issues from having a tough school year where sometimes kids aren’t so nice, but came out of the end of camp stronger and believing in herself in a new way. You all are helping to shape young people there, not just teaching them music and acting. It’s evident that there are life lessons being taught at HITS.
